I have to admit, it
took me a while to decipher the difference between Resale; Reprint;
Master Resale and all the other variations of Rights available
on the Internet.
Right! (no pun intended),
back to basics. As you know, your ebook software or if you prefer
your ebook compiler, formats your ebook creation. As an ebook
creator, you then have a choice of how you wish to market and
sell that ebook.
You could elect to
give your ebook away for FREE or alternatively sell it for $19.97
or something similar. However, just as in the real
world you can decide to offer Resale Rights, sometimes also called
Reprint Rights, to your HTML ebook.
Resale Rights can entitle,
anyone purchasing an ebook with these type of rights, to resell
that ebook and keep every penny for themselves. Just as I have
done with Easy Ebook Creator! Now, these rights
do NOT pass to their customers, otherwise the ebook maker might
only ever sell one copy of their ebook and what a disaster that
would be!
Master Resale Rights,
on the other hand, DO allow the transfer of Resale Rights to your
customer. these are normally sold at a higher price, for obvious
reasons.
In both situations,
when you write an ebook and give away rights, they are normally
accompanied by a marketing web site that your customer can tailor
to suit their needs.
So, when should I offer
Resale Rights? When you make an ebook it will have a certain shelf
life i.e. it will not be in vogue forever, even though you would
like to think so. All bestseller's sales dwindle after a while
and are replaced by the next wonder. That's why these type of
rights are generally introduced towards the end of the ebooks
shelf life as a means to eek out more sales.
There
are many variations on the theme but basically they are all pretty
similar in nature. Do not forget to read the small print for pricing
restrictions etc.
