I have to say from
the outset here that I am most definitely biased.
Why so Dave I hear
you say? Well, I do have a vested interest in that I manufacture,
sell and market ebook software better known as an ebook compiler
and even better known as Easy Ebook Creator.
That said, I'll try
(yes I said try) and be objective here. I much prefer the HTML
ebook approach over the PDF format because your ebook creation
can be, with a little bit of artistic ability and flair, a much
more interesting graphical experience. Just take a look at the
number of fantastic web sites there are and you'll see that there
is little limitation to what can be done.
As an ebook maker,
I demand that level of flexibility, even though I may choose not
to use it, to know that it is there gives me tremendous comfort
and (in my case) plenty of room for growth.
If you did not already
know, when you make an ebook in the HTML format it is virtually
exactly the same as creating a web site in that it uses the same
technology. That is why most ebook compilers are only available
on PCs with Internet Explorer.
Whilst creating an
ebook in PDF format gives you access to MacIntosh PC users (MACs)
- in reality this represents less than 10% of the market and I
would suspect that even those users could easily gain ready access
to a standard PC, if required.
Additionally, when
I write an ebook it is usually from a business standpoint and
therefore, most probably, will contain reseller links to third
party products on which I will get a commission. Creating PDF
ebooks that can have these reseller links changed WITHOUT giving
access to the ebook itself is non standard in PDF, another reason
why it has not been universally accepted in internet marketing
circles.
Regardless of the foregoing,
each format has its place but as I said at the beginning, i know
which one I prefer and for the moment at least, I am sticking
to it.
