Ebook software, more
commonly known as an ebook compiler, is used to assist in the
ebook creation process.
You can opt for either
a PDF (Portable Document Format) version from Adobe, which will
run on a Mac and a PC or you can use the EXE version, which stands
for executable. The EXE version requires Microsoft's Internet
Explorer to be installed.
As an ebook creator,
the choice of format is crucial however, there are pros and cons
to both.
EXE Pros:
- HTML ebooks are
cheaper to produce.
- It is possible when
creating ebooks to BRAND them (create ebooks with active reseller
links) which is important when offering Resale Rights.
- Offers more visual
options when you write an ebook.
PDF Pros:
- Viewed as the Industry
Standard
- Offers a larger
market potential because it is supported on macintosh PCs.
EXE Cons:
- Will not run on
a Macintosh computer which will exclude you from <10% of
the market.
- Not as yet regarded
as the industry standard format.
PDF Cons:
- PDF ebooks are created
using Adobe Acrobat which is considerably more expensive that
an EXE compiler.
- PDF ebooks tend
to be larger than their equivalent EXE version.
- The ability to Brand
ebooks (create ebooks with active reseller links) is limited.
- As an ebook maker,
I find the EXE format more versatile in terms of style and visual
presentation i.e. just like a web site.
